Stepping into La Chambre Surréaliste, one is instantly transported into a surrealist fantasy world that commands every inch of your attention. A bedroom dominated by bold red hues, quirky motifs, and flamboyant textures, it is the work of Maurizio Galante and Tal Lancman, who designed the space for AD Intérieurs 2017, a yearly affair in Paris that commissions and exhibits the best of interior design and decor. While the pair has produced a plethora of exceptional creations in their time, La Chambre Surréaliste might just be their best yet.

A quirky, over-the-top, crimson wonderland by design duo Maurizio Galante and Tal Lancman.

Galante, the Italian costume maker and high-fashion designer, made his name in the world of haute couture with his colourful, eccentric, and larger-than-life garments.

Hailing from Israel, on the other hand, is Lancman, who is the former editor and creative director of Textile View magazine, and a highly lionised authority on design trends. They came together in 2003 to form Interware, a design and consultancy agency, and have since undertaken an ambitious diversity of projects, including food and gardening. Now based in Paris, the design duo have come to be known for their bravely unorthodox and theatrical signature style.

place of slumber and dreams, the bedroom serves as an exemplary space for the imagination of a fantastical, outlandish wonderland such as La Chambre Surréaliste. It is a space that pushes boundaries and breaks rules. For one, almost everything in this room is in red. Although the idea of a red-on-red colour scheme seems like too much to handle, Galante and Lancman pull it off with great panache. Balanced with various shades of crimson, the common hue anchors the eclectic patterns of the space.

The colour of rage, passion, courage and strength in Western culture, red is representative of blood and fire, both of which are essential elements of life. It isn’t a shade that sits back, but one that runs to the frontline of a battlefield. Red also holds symbolic value in Chinese culture as a colour of happiness, celebration, and fortune. Widely used in his works as a fashion designer, the expressive, versatile colour has become something of a trademark for Galante – and with good reason.

As he explains himself to The New York Times, “Red is a colour that is full of contradictions. It is the repository of both good and bad memories, and the point where kindness and bitterness collide.”

La Chambre Surréaliste, a psychedelic, textile-focused interior, marries high art with kitsch. It is upholstered completely from wall to wall, ceiling to floor, in a carpet fabric from the House of Tai Ping, a brand based in Hong Kong that has been producing handmade, haute couture carpets for more than 60 years. The thick textile boasts massive Rorschach-inspired motifs with a splotchy onyx look that creates a sense of motion and vitality. It features a kaleidoscope of red hues, from scarlet to maroon, that is juxtaposed with streaks of white. In a striking shade of siren red is the king-size canopy bed. Perhaps the most functional, minimal and streamlined piece of furniture in the room, the slender steel ILletto bed frame is adorned with simple curtains, made with soft ribbons and hand-folded layers of tulle. Crafted at the duo’s atelier by the same artisans behind their fashion masterpieces, the bed is designed by Galante and Lancman for Opinion Ciatti, an Italian family-run label established in 1950 that manufactures exquisitely functional designer furniture.

A mismatched display of the “Tiger Light” bedside lamps – with one suspending from the ceiling, and other resting on a wooden side table – complements the bed with a touch of whimsy. Taking the shape of a Siberian tiger skull, the ornamental light sources are part of an earlier collection, a collaborative effort between the duo and Frédéric Zeltner, that displays their dedication to wildlife preservation. The lamps feature a glassy surface whose reflectiveness is also found in the mirrored “Gaga” cabinet. A high sideboard coated with stainless steel, it is another Galante design developed for Opinion Ciatti. Featuring an overlapping array of mirrored discs on its front, it adds to the surreal design of the room by reflecting the carpet motifs in a way that distorts them.

Sitting at the centre of the space is the pièce de résistance, a “Cat in the Box” trio consisting of a high-backed armchair and two ottomans. They are unconventional, not only in their design, but also their material. Covered entirely in faux fur, the purplish red pieces are speckled with cat-like glass eyes, making them a quirky yet fitting centrepiece that anchors the surreal vision of the space. Inside La Chambre Surréaliste, one also cannot miss the sculptural silk mural, hanging over the “Gaga” cabinet, or the neon artwork of a lion and a unicorn, inspired by a 16th century tapestry, on the opposite wall. Over-the-top, maximalist and unapologetically avant-garde, La Chambre Surréaliste illustrates Galante and Lancman’s flair for translating haute couture elements into interior design. The space celebrates the idea of beauty in absurdity, and certainly never fails to envelop its visitors in the spectacular world the designers have created in a single room.

位于空间中央的是 pièce de résistance “Cat in the Box”,由高背扶手椅和两个ottomans组成的三重奏。
