Inspiration
Her work fuses her upbringing in the English countryside with her urban city life: drawing inspiration from nature, from the city, and its architecture. Helen’s passion for surface reliefs came to the fore when she visited India for a three-month research trip. She was motivated by the carvings in wood and marble to translate similar effects into textiles.
“As a designer, I am always thinking about how I can create unique and innovative luxury textiles that create an illusion for the viewer, because I achieve a sculptural aesthetic usually associated with solid materials” as she shared on the Contemporary Applied Arts London portal.
Style
Her style is centred on the importance of hand craftsmanship, with traditional techniques elevated to art forms. Leather being her material of choice, Helen and her team also work with other selected luxury materials such as woven fabrics, silk and suede. The intricate motifs of her creations give movements and texture to otherwise flat surfaces, bringing materials to life. Helen layered aesthetics ranges from bespoke upholstery to wall coverings, from window displays and to art pieces.
Her hand-crafted creations reveal a journey into the possibility of materials, their yielding features responding only to the most expert of the artisans. Playing with depth and shadows, sculptural appearance and softness, Helen creates works of a mesmerising appearance. Her process of working creates illusions such as that her creations from a distance, can look like plasters or wood carvings.
Uniqueness
Helen mystifying handcrafted techniques have put her on the map of premium brands, looking for uniqueness and refined quality. Among others, she has been collaborating with Rolls-Royce Motors for designing and hand-carving the interiors of the flagship New Phantoms car creating breathtaking limited editions. In 2003 she received the overall prize at the Oxo Peugeot Design Awards and the prize for innovation from NESTA (The National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts), which resulted in a commissioned series of merchandise for the Tate Britain, London. Helen’s Peony rug was awarded the Homes & Gardens award 2008 and the BIDA Award at Decorex Fair in the same year.
