The ‘Shadows Of Things We Wish We Had’ rug was the centerpiece of a larger solo exhibit of design objects created by Bureau Spectacular at Volume Gallery in Chicago.
Within the tradition of painting, the still life is a typology that carries a history where, a curated representation of one’s identity is made public through objects. In still life paintings, collections of inanimate objects are arranged in three-dimensional space on a two-dimensional plane. Through this process, the identity of the individual is symbolically communicated through the staging of said objects.
With his Limited Edition collection of rugs for Urban Fabric, Lai challenges the typical two-dimensional, ornamental relationship rugs have with architecture. Some of his rugs cover a floor as well as a wall, others exist between two rooms as if the rug preceded the construction of the wall. Corner Splat is a three-dimensional piece that exists in the corner of a room, creating a new type of relationship with architecture and defining a unique new space in the process.
The collection is exclusively Made to Order and can be customized under specific dimensions respecting the original concept and design.
